Out and about in
Western Australia

Road tripping the length and breadth of Western Australia should be high on anyone’s bucket list. The journey takes you through a vast and varied landscape, decorated in one of nature’s most striking palettes of desert red and ocean blue. Fishing, surfing, walking, snorkelling – it’s all awesome in WA.

The south is renowned for squeaky white beaches and pink saline lakes at Esperance, impressive rock formations such as Wave Rock, remarkable limestone caves at Margaret River, soaring karri forests near Albany, the rugged mountains of the Stirling Ranges, and gold mines out in Kalgoorlie.

Whether you fly in or arrive by land, Perth is a laidback capital city worth getting to know. Exploring the convict sites of historic Fremantle, getting your quokka selfie at Rottnest Island, and enjoying the food and wine trails around Swan Hill – there’s never a dull moment in Perth.

The drive from Perth to Exmouth is a pearler, taking in the Pinnacles lunarscape, the mighty red gorges and sea cliffs of Kalbarri, and Shark Bay’s ancient living fossils, abundant marine life and unique beaches.

The breathtaking Ningaloo Reef calls this stretch of coast home, a place to swim with whale sharks, manta rays and humpbacks, snorkel straight from the beach, and explore the canyons of Cape Range National Park on foot. This region is also the starting line for the desert wildflower bloom, a tidal wave of colour sweeping south between July and November.

A swim in the flooded canyons and turquoise pools of Karijini National Park, and then it’s onwards to Broome for sunset camel rides along Cable Beach, pearl farm visits and dusty drives up the Dampier Peninsula.

The wild Kimberley wilderness takes over from here, a land of spectacular gorges, thundering waterfalls and far-flung beaches accessed via the legendary, and bumpy, Gibb River Road. Before crossing the border, beeline for the hive-shaped Bungle-Bungle Range and the striking slot chasms of Purnululu National Park.

Camping is undeniably the most rewarding way to connect with WA. From caravan parks and roadhouses to national park campsites and station stays, all you have to do is pull up, unhitch, set up and relax.
