Out and about in Port Macquarie

If you’re after a combination of history, wildlife, beaches, rainforest and mountains on your next camping trip, you’re gonna love exploring Port Macquarie. Outdoor fun is always on the cards when you’re travelling to Port Macquarie, with the Hastings River on one side, mountains to the west, and no less than 17 surf beaches making up the coastline.

With so many beaches around, which one do you choose? For a great day in the sand with the family, head to Lake Cathie Beach or Flynns Beach. If you’ve got your dog along, Nobbys is the beach for you. Surfers can walk from the CBD to Town Beach for the best swell, while Oxley Beach and Shelly Beach are a couple of tucked-away gems perfect for beach-goers hoping to escape the crowds.

Plan enough time in town to wander among the heritage buildings that hark back to colonial times, and complete the 9km coastal walk which ends at the picturesque Tacking Point Lighthouse. The Hastings River is perfect for exploring by kayak, and the coastal lakes are also worth a look-in, such as Lake Innes or Queens Lake – perfect for sunset.

Animal and wildlife lovers are in for a treat in Port Macquarie, which is most famous for its koala population and rehabilitation centre, as well as seasonal migrating whales and wondrous marine life. A soundtrack of birdsong plays as you explore Port Mac’s neighbouring national parks and state forests, home to majestic waterfalls including the 200m Ellenborough Falls, one of Australia’s tallest.
