Out and about in North Coast NSW

The NSW North Coast  has so much to offer campers, caravanners and outdoor adventurers, and makes for an unforgettable  road trip through some of Australia’s best holiday destinations. Slow down to a relaxing pace set by the ocean-loving locals and prepare to be blown away as you encounter NSW’s best surf breaks, tallest waterfalls, oldest rainforests, and most magnificent whale migrations. Whether you’re visiting the hinterland villages or seaside towns, the North Coast is the perfect place to eat well, hit the beach, relax amongst nature, and enjoy day after day of sunshine.

The region is a no-brainer for beach-goers. Whether it’s the calm, crystal blue coves of Port Stephens and Seal Rocks, not far from Newcastle, or long stretches of sand where the waves roll in perfect form – think Forster, Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie, you’ll want to have your foamies and pool floats at the ready. Incredible headlands bookend many of the North Coast beaches, so swap sandals for sneakers and walk the dramatic coast trails that lead to historic lighthouses and jawdropping views over the Pacific Ocean.

With at least 90 national parks and reserves, including tracts of Gondwanan rainforest, the NSW North Coast is just as spectacular further inland. Volcanic mountains cut with deep gorges and undeveloped rivers flank the region, so you’re never far from fantastic bushwalks, 4WD tracks, kayaking routes, bush campsites and areas to watch birds and wildlife in their natural habitats. Dorrigo, Nightcap and Myall Lakes National Parksare a few of the most popular spots. If you’ve got a big appetite for adventure, consider tackling the white water of the Clarence River, hang-gliding in Byron Bay, or scuba diving with grey nurse sharks in Forster-Tuncurry.

The NSW North Coast is rich with cultural experiences and the customs of the local Indigenous communities are told through an array of fascinating art galleries, exhibitions, interpretive walking trails, bush tucker cafes and guided adventure tours by quad bike or stand-up paddle board.

Stories from the road

CamperMate’s blog is chock-full of information and inspiration from our crew of travelling storytellers. With destination guides on amazing spots right along the NSW North Coast, you’ll find everything you need to plan your next sandy escape.

Seal Rocks – Paradise At Your Front Door

Seal Rocks is small, there’s just one corner store at the top of the hill, and a coffee van in the summer months. But the quiet atmosphere of this tucked-away gem is precisely its appeal.

The Delights of Lennox Head

Sunshine, chilled vibes and surf for days, Lennox Head  has everything you could want in a beachside town. It’s quiet enough for an escape out of the city, or Byron Bay, but busy enough to keep you entertained.
