Out and about in Tamworth

If you’re keen to get a taste of New South Wales country living, make tracks to Tamworth – around six hours from Sydney and four hours from Newcastle. With its wide open spaces, picturesque Peel River, sundrenched pastures and wooded hillsides, you’ll love parking your caravan or pitching your tent in this RV Friendly Town. Tamworth is bustling with great dining options, shopping centres and entertainment you’d expect in a city, but with a laidback country atmosphere. In January the town comes alive as thousands of campers arrive for the famous week-long Country Music Festival.

Exploring outside of town opens up endless possibilities for cultural activities and outdoor adventures. Wind your way up into the hills and you could find yourself panning for gold at historic Nundle, climbing through a maze of balancing boulders in Cathedral Rock National Park, or linking historic cattleman’s huts on foot through Oxley Wild Rivers National Park.

Head west to enjoy watersports and boating at Lake Keepit, or when the water’s low, follow the mud flats in your 4WD to find the lake’s hidden ruins. Retrace the footsteps of local legend and bushranger Captain Thunderbolt while admiring the ivy-cloaked heritage buildings in Uralla.

The Fossicker’s Way heads north from Tamworth, so if searching for fossils, petrified wood and semi-precious metals and stones is your thing, there’s a heap of reserves and old mines throughout the Northern Tablelands to keep you happy. Or if you like to mix it up, why not go birdwatching in Barraba, fishing in Bingara, or paragliding in Manilla?

A bit of curiosity goes a long way in Tamworth and the Northern Tablelands, a place jam-packed with history and natural wonders just waiting to be found.
